Farmers, RSP hold protest

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 31: The Revolutionary Socialist Party-backed peasants’ wing Sanjukta Kishan Sabha (SKS) today staged demonstrations in all 15 blocks of the district protesting against various issues including the plight of the farmers residing close to the Bangladesh border, and tribals’ problems in the district. The SKS leadership demanded publication of revised enrolment of people belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category. The leaders alleged that the BPL list was to be published six months ago but no initiative has been taken yet. The RSP district secretary, Mr Goutam Gupta, demanded that the state government should acquire Indian land including farmland situated beyond the border fence and provide proper compensation and rehabilitation to save the farmers. He further demanded implementation of various projects including old-age pension meant for the tribals. The leaders claimed that the government should consider 60 years of age, instead of 65 years, for providing old age pension for tribals belonging to the BPL category. According to the RSP leaders, tribals belonging to Paharia community in English Bazaar do not even have ration cards, voting rights, deed of rights and do not enjoy any basic amenities either.
