Question raised about trip cancellation

KOTWALI (Malda), Dec. 7: A section of Congress leaders do not believe that Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh's visit's in Malda was cancelled due to fogs at Purnia air base today.

Though the Malda MP, A H Khan Choudhury attributed the cancellation to dense fog at the Purnea airbase, the English Bazaar MLA, Mr. Krishnendu Narayan Choudhury dismissed the fog factor as a reason behind the cancellation. “The Prime Minister has perhaps cancelled the Malda trip as he is preoccupied at the capital in the wake of the recent Mumbai mayhem,” he said. The Congress MLA Mr. Choudhury could not rule out security reasons for the cancellation. "Dr Singh might have cancelled his trip in view of the intelligence input apprehending a KLO or a HUJI strike,” he said.

The locals also seemed skeptical about the official reason for the sudden cancellation of the PM's trip. “We have inquired over phone from our friends residing in Purnea whether the fog was as dense as the officials claimed. The answer is in the negative. The sky was as clear as it could be,” said a number of locals. nsns
