Road block for road repair

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec 22: Locals blocked road at Sustani demanding immediate repair of a road connecting NH-34 and Mahadipur land customs station near the India-Bangladesh border.

The blockade was lifted after after the intervention of district administration and an assurance from the the project manager of ADB (Asian Development Bank) in presence of other officials of the bank.

Vehicles could not ply on the road after the assigned contractor for the construction of the road left work and ‘disappeared’ somewhere a couple of months ago. He never resumed the work and since then the condition of the road has been so poor that the vehicles chose to kept away from it. Thereafter, the condition of the road further deteriorated with heavy vehicular movement on it. The road blocked was lifted when the project manager Mr PP Badyopadhayay said that the repairing work would be started from Wednesday, said Malda SDO Mr Prakash Pal.

When contacted, over phone, Mr PP Bandyopadhayay said: “We could not continue the initial repairing work since the contractor ran away and never came joined work. We will start the repair work from Wednesday with the help of our other contractors in this project.”

Mr Bandyopadhayay  said that initially the PWD department had estimated Rs 15 crore to build the 13.3 km stretch of road under Asian Development Bank. "We have planned to float a fresh tender for the project in March 2009 and complete the project by 2010," he said. He further added that to float a contract would mean termination of previous contracts.
