Loan scam: SBI conducts probe

MALDA, Dec. 31: The State Bank of India has started a departmental inquiry against a section of employees involved in a loan fraud case where Rs 8.40 lakh was sanctioned to a client, who allegedly submitted a stolen land deed to the bank as mortgage, in June 2008.

The matter came to light on Monday when Mr Mahimuddin Sheikh, a farmer of Shersahi in Kaliachak police station, sought clarification from the bank authorities on a notice served to him to pay instalment against a loan of Rs 8.40 lakh. The SBI branch manager at Majampur in Kaliachak issued the notice based on records urging him to pay instalment against loan obtained. When the victim challenged the branch manager, it was detected that one Astab Ali, a neigbour of Mahimuddin, had allegedly forged his signature and submitted his own photograph as Mahimuddin's with the loan application.

It may be noted that the former branch manager had sanctioned the loan. He was transferred to Kolkata just after sanctioning the loan. Mahimuddin Shiekh lodged an FIR at the Kaliachak police station on Monday with the help of the local CPI-M MLA, Mr Biswanath Ghosh against his neighbour Astab Ali describing the scam following which the police registered the case and started an investigation. “Action would be taken if any employee is found guilty in the investigation,” said Mr B Haldar, regional manager, SBI. n SNS
