BSF opens fire at restlers

MALDA, Dec. 14: The Border Security Force opened at least seven rounds of fire to chase away a group of Bangladeshi people who were found trying to smuggle cattle across the border at two places under the English Bazaar police station area last night.

According to the 123-battalion BSF, two groups of Bangladeshi cattle smugglers were about 100 metres inside the Indian territory. They were fired upon while trying to return to Bangladesh with a herd of cattle. They tried to sneak out taking advantage of the thick fog, the BSF officials said.

It is learnt from the BSF sources that the jawans, having failed to intercept the infiltrators in the nick of time owing to poor visibility, had to open fire to restrain them them from crossing the border. At Peasbari, the BSF opened two rounds of fire and at Kestopur the BSF had to fire five rounds. One Bangladeshi cattle-lifter was reportedly shot at and one cattle was killed in BSF firing at the spot, the BSF official said.

“A total of eight Bangladeshi smugglers sneaked into the Indian territory along the unfenced border last night taking advantage of the dense fog,” said Mr JC Nayek, Commandant of 123-battalion BSF.

The smugglers had, however, managed to take away a number of cattle with them, said the BSF officials. n SNS
