Landless labourers in Malda registered for PF

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 1: The Malda district administration has registered 12,377 landless labourers in Malda for the provident fund for landless agriculture labourer scheme. There is no beneficiary from Chanchal I block in the list prepared by the panchayat and rural development department so far.

The district P&RD officer, Mrs Shrabani Dhar admitted that no name of landless labourer came up from the Chanchal I block at the time of selecting the beneficiaries for the scheme. “We had to launch a special drive to select beneficiaries from that block,” she added. According to her, 900 applications have been received from landless labourers after a special drive in Chanchal block I and government officials including land and land reforms officials are verifying the applications for selection.

People with less than 50 decimal land would be selected for the provident fund scheme where the beneficiary would pay Rs 20 and the government will pay an equal share per month for him. The Malda district administration aims to register more than 55,000 landless labourers to implement the provident fund scheme and the district administration has been able to register 12,377 landless labourers up to October.

A large number of landless labourers have been included from the erosion-hit Kaliachak II block in the district. A total of 2237 persons have been registered for this scheme from the block. But in Bamongola, another tribal dominated block, only 55 people have been selected for the scheme.

After Kaliachak II, 1662 persons have been registered from the tribal dominated block of Gazol.

From Ratua-I block 1160 labourers and 1233 from Harishchandrapur II block have been selected. The lowest figure has been recorded in English Bazaar block where only 343 persons have been registered for the project.
