Security stepped up along Bangla border

MALDA, Dec. 2: Patrolling has been intensified along the India-Bangladesh border including the rivers after the recent terror attacks in Mumbai, a senior BSF official said today.

Since 26 November, the superintendents of police of nine bordering districts in the state were asked to coordinate with the border security force to keep vigilance along the border so that linkmen with the terrorists group sneaking into India could not flee.

Mr PS Tomar, DIG, Malda BSF sector, said: “Vigilance has been stepped up along the border including riverine areas in the region so that no one can escape taking this route.” “We have already asked villagers in some of the identified areas along the border to provide information if they find any ‘unknown and suspected’ person,” Mr Tomar said. According to BSF officials, Malda superintendent of police had requested BSF officials to deploy extra force along the border especially in the Kaliachak-I, Kaliachak-III, Habibpur, Bamongola and English Bazaar areas. According to Mr PS Tomar, the BSF jawans have been deployed especially for river patrolling so that the porosity of the border areas could be reduced.

The BSF officials had been holding co-ordination meets with the Bangladesh Rifles since yesterday and sought their cooperation in detaining any body who attempts to cross the border. “We have requested them not to fire immediately after hearing gunshots from the Indian side (in case of an encounter with any group) without talking to BSF official,” said Mr Tomar. “The BDR officials have been in constant touch with us since last night,” he added.

Besides Sagar in South 24-Parganas, there are several rivers that Bangladesh and India share including Ganga and Padma in Malda and Murshidabad respectively which have been identified as major transit points of infiltration and corridor for smuggling of various items including arms and fake currencies.

The district intelligence branch and the Malda railway protection forces are still keeping watch on Malda town stations here because of train line connection it with Delhi and Mumbai. n SNS
