BSF admits criminals using Bangladeshi SIM cards near Indo-Bangla border

Statesman News Service
MALDA, Dec. 11: The Border Security Force (BSF) is facing difficulties to curb criminal activities along the Indo-Bangladesh border due to active mobile network of Bangladesh on the Indian side.

“Despite several requests made to Bangladeshi counterparts to take steps towards blocking its network, no action has been taken yet," a senior BSF official said today. The BSF officials have expressed cause of serious security concern and informed its higher authorities to start a dialogue with the Bangladesh government for setting up jammers along the Indo-Bangladesh border. In the first week of December the Deputy Inspector General of BSF in Malda sector, Mr P S Tomar had informed about it to the Inspector General of BSF, South Bengal Frontier, requesting him to draw the attention of its higher authorities.

“Bangladeshi SIMs (called Grameen Phone) are flooded not only in Malda and South Dinajpur areas but also in South Bengal villages close to Kolkata. “Many Bangladeshi nationals who entered the Indian side are carrying out illegal activities using Bangladeshi SIM cards from here. Their mobile connectivity should be jammed immediately”, Mr Tomar said.

He said that Indian cell phone providers, both governments's undertaking and private service providers have set up jammers along the border in Malda and South Dinajpur district areas following our requests.

The connectivity power of Indian cell phone along the border is low so that none can contact people of other countries from the border line. It was also alleged that many Indian exporters, who deal with Bangladesh, secretly managed Grameen SIM of Bangladesh government just to keep contact with Bangladeshi importers when they do not get access to Bangladesh from their Indian cell phone at land custom station areas in India side.
