MALDA, Dec. 26: The district magistrate, Malda Mr Sridhar Ghosh today expressed unhappiness with the role of some “reluctant agriculture department officials,” who are yet to distribute mini kit for cultivation of mustard, wheat, pulses and other grains in the district.
Though the agriculture department in Malda, said that his officials did not distribute the seeds in view of the model code of conduct for the Sujapur Assembly by polls, the DM has not bought the “excuse.” “The agriculture department did not distribute the seeds and is still waiting for their old distribution network through gram panchayat members. Meantime the season for sowing seeds has rolled by,” Mr Ghosh said today. When contacted on the matter, the principal agriculture officer, Malda Mr R K Das said the deadline for distribution of mustard seed was over. He, however, failed to explain why his department did not distribute the seeds even after getting permission from the election commission.
The agriculure department is now looking to mend the situation. The PAO Mr Das said over phone from Kolkata: “I am looking into the matter so that farmers get other seeds on time."
